It gives us great satisfaction to know that our orchids end up in such exceptional settings around the world. Ultimately, we grow with one goal in mind: that our flowers truly come into their own in the final application. The fact that you work with them makes that even more meaningful. We know they are in the hands of professionals who understand quality and know how to translate it into something truly special. That completes the picture for us.

Walter Grootscholten was founded by your grandfather in 1972 and remains a family business to this day. As the next generation leading the nursery, what responsibility do you feel in preserving that legacy, and what do you think he would be most proud of today?

I believe my grandfather would first and foremost be incredibly proud of my father and what he has built the company into today. He truly established Phalaenopsis by Walter within the world of cut Phalaenopsis. To now be able to lead the company together with my father and our team is something I deeply value. At the same time, the business of growing has changed significantly. It is no longer just about cultivation. With Ron van Adrichem as our business partner, we have a strong addition to the company. Together, we ensure that we continue to build on what the name Phalaenopsis by Walter stands for: absolute top quality, without compromise.

Growing a Phalaenopsis orchid is an exercise in patience and precision, with months of cultivation behind every stem. In a world that increasingly values speed, what has orchid growing taught you about the importance of taking time?

Phalaenopsis forces you to be patient. By nature, it is not a fast-growing crop; it takes 6 months at least from cutting to cutting. We consciously choose not to rush that process. You can accelerate certain aspects, but it will always come at the expense of quality. For us, that is not an option. True top quality takes time, and that investment is clearly reflected in the final product.

Walter Grootscholten is renowned for producing exceptional Phalaenopsis orchids with a clear focus on quality. What philosophy guides your cultivation process, and how do you continue to refine your approach as new technologies and industry changes emerge?

Our cultivation approach stems from a constant drive to improve. Every day, we fine-tune all the factors that influence the plant, with quality as our absolute priority. At the same time, we have to respond to external developments such as regulations and energy changes. The transition to full LED is a good example. It is a sustainable step, but it also has a significant impact on the greenhouse climate. Every change requires new insights. In that sense, growing Phalaenopsis remains a craft in which you are constantly learning and adapting, down to the finest details.

When you walk into the glasshouse each morning, what is the first thing you look for, and what still excites you after all these years?

The moment in spring when the screens open and the first morning light falls on the flowers always remains special. The way the light reflects on the orchids creates a kind of sparkle and shine that is hard to describe. Seeing that is, quite simply, pure magic.

Flowers are present at many of life’s most meaningful moments, from celebrations and weddings to moments of reflection and remembrance. Does knowing where your orchids may ultimately be enjoyed give a deeper meaning to the work you do?

Absolutely. The awareness that our flowers become part of important moments in people’s lives gives our work deeper meaning. We operate in a niche market that is challenging, but precisely because of that, it is also very special. Every stem that leaves here ultimately becomes part of a memory and that is what makes what we do truly valuable. We also always tell our team that even the way our boxes are packed should feel like a work of art. Opening a box should be an experience in itself and that is where the story really begins.

Beyond orchids and the glasshouse, what inspires you? How do you like to spend your time when you’re away from the nursery?

Much of my inspiration comes from entrepreneurship and the constant desire to improve, both within and beyond the business. At the same time, I believe it is important to spend time with family and friends. That balance helps you stay sharp. By also looking beyond our sector, you maintain a fresh perspective on what you do.

During a recent visit to Walter Grootscholten, we were fortunate enough to discover an extraordinary new Phalaenopsis variety unlike anything we had seen before. Requiring almost nine months to cultivate and grown exclusively by your team, what makes this orchid so special, and why was it worth the additional time and care?

This variety truly stands out because of its unique colour, something that is simply not yet available within cut Phalaenopsis. Its cultivation requires more time and patience than we are used to, but that is exactly what makes it interesting. We consciously choose to invest in differentiation. This type of product demonstrates where our strength lies: exclusivity, quality, and the willingness to commit to a longer process.

Sustainability has long been woven into the fabric of Walter Grootscholten. Looking back, which initiative or innovation are you most proud of, and what are you focused on improving next?

The transition to energy-efficient solutions, such as LED, has been an important step for us. Not only because it is more sustainable, but especially because we have managed to implement it without compromising our quality and that is what truly matters. In addition, we have invested in approximately 400 floating solar panels on our water basin. This allows us, particularly during the summer months when cooling demand is high, to generate our own electricity and operate independently from the grid. Our focus now is on further optimisation: using energy, resources, and processes more efficiently, while maintaining our high standards.

As you look towards the future, what excites you most about the next chapter for orchid growing, and how do you see the world of floriculture evolving over the coming years?

I expect the market to continue evolving towards greater specialisation and the higher end of the segment. Mass production will always exist, but true distinction lies in quality and exclusivity. That is where our future lies as well: continuing to innovate, while staying true to our core. The demand for high-quality, distinctive varieties will only continue to grow.

If you could choose just one orchid from the Walter Grootscholten collection to represent the nursery’s philosophy and craftsmanship, which would it be, and why?

I would choose Alba Royale. This variety embodies everything we stand for: strength, elegance, and exceptional longevity. It is not the easiest to grow, but that is exactly where the craftsmanship becomes visible. It is also a variety that Walter has crossed by himself. It is an orchid that shows that quality is always the result of deliberate choices, making it a perfect representation of Phalaenopsis by Walter.
